Tips for visiting London at Halloween
Walking tours are always a wonderful way to get to know a town. Many cities offer "Ghost Walks", an entertaining way to soak up history and local lore, and sure to spark an interest in kids. What better time to do a Ghost Walk in London than Halloween? London attractions frequently run spooky special events on that night.
London Dungeon - This attraction, beneath London Bridge Station, is a bit like a year-round Halloween House of Horrors: it recreates various macabre bits of history (The Great Fire, the Plague, Jack the Ripper), with live actors, shows and special effects; it also has a giant maze with scary features.
Tower of London - Probably the most for real haunted place in Britain: the roster of potential ghosts (imprisoned and/or executed) includes not only the two famous "Princes in the Tower" but also Guy Fawkes, Anne Boleyn, and more..
If you dare, the Jack the Ripper guided walk starts at Tower Hill Underground station daily at 7.30pm. It covers all of his favourite haunts, and you can visit the murder sites and hear the evidence that has baffled the experts for over 100 years.
Myth and Mystery - Discover mummies, curses, footsteps and headless bodies every Sunday on the Mysterious London tour. The Blood & Tears Walk is an award-winning eerie London walk that runs several times a week. Following the story of London's dark and murky past, it took years of research and covers sites connected with grave robbers, killers, vice, witchcraft and dark conspiracies!
Petrifying Pubs - Why not begin your evening with a pint of snakebite and black at one of these cosy locals.
The Blind Beggar in Whitechapel was a favourite of the Kray brothers. Ronnie Kray shot rival gangster George Cornell here in 1966. Or visit The Grenadier, SW1. At this pub, one unlucky chap was caught cheating at cards and flogged to death. His ghost now haunts the pub by night, so keep an eye on your drinks!
Ward off the vampires with a beverage at Garlic & Shots. This Gothic-styled bar has a candlelit basement and plenty of garlic on the drinks menu.
