How to live with elderly parents under one roof

When you live for a long time way from your parents you may feel that some part of your life is missing. Even if you have your husband or a wife or children you still want to have a good contact with your mom and dad. One of the reasons would be you want to help them just as they helped you for years or you just want their company. When we¡¯re planning to build a new house, we may decide to build a bigger one and invite your aging parents or in-laws to move in with you. This lifestyle can work very well if some rules are obeyed.

Speak with them and your partner about everything in advance about planning lifestyle, routines and expectations.

You should think before they move in, create an atmosphere of respect, and make rules that will work for everyone in the family.

There¡¯s no formula for every family. Each family has its own lifestyle. You are going to live together to handle everything with great care and sensitivity.

Think about your children. Grandparents are always a great help with raising your kids but they also should step back and let you discipline your own children in your way.

Make sure everyone has some privacy. This may mean adding a separate suite to your home, installing an extra bathroom or even just rearranging your home slightly. Even though your parents no longer live in their own home, they'll still want some space of their own and some private time to themselves.

You can divide your house in parts that belong to them or just separate bedroom with bathrooms and share living rooms etc. Figure out what goes where.

You might have ask them to sell most of their furniture or house parts as you will want to design your own home your way.

Speak with them about costs, how much who needs to pay for bills etc. Discuss everything in advance.
